Josef’s portrait work focuses on faces, expression, identity, and emotional presence. His portraits often begin from photographic references, then develop into oil-on-canvas works through careful attention to detail, colour, posture, and character.
Josef's figurative abstract paintings are inspired by realistic portraits and figures, whether drawn from one of his own works or inspired by people he has observed. He transforms the real into the imagined through imagination, bold colour, expressive shapes, and abstraction to create entirely new compositions. The result is artwork that bridges reality and fantasy, inviting viewers to discover their own meanings and connections within each piece.
This body of work marks a return to painting after a long period away from the canvas. Josef re-engaged with his practice through florals, horses, abstract compositions, and architectural studies. These works form an important part of his artistic development and led to a focused evolution into portraiture and figurative expression, which now define his practice.

Returning to painting after more than 30 years was both exciting and uncertain.
To my surprise, the artistic ability I once knew had not disappeared with time. In many ways, it felt stronger. Maybe it was life experience, a deeper focus, and trusting my intuition that allowed my artistic vision to resurface.
I have never felt limited by time or age. My mindset has always been about moving toward the things that matter most to me and my family. I take thoughtful risks and reach for more when it feels right.
Even when faced with doubt, I have learned to stay focused on my vision and continue with purpose. That same mindset has guided my return to my art career.
It is never too late to begin again or start an entirely new chapter. If you are willing to believe in yourself and stay determined, more is possible than you may realize.
I hope my artwork inspires not only joy and curiosity, but also the courage to keep creating, growing, and pursuing what matters to you at any stage of life.
